Green transport - technology and diversity

The purpose of the project is to enhance knowledge about how green initiatives in the transportation sector can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable transportation system and society. The project is developing a Continuing Education (VEU) program for employees in the fields of transportation, environment, planning, and technology in Danish municipalities and is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

Green bike

The VEU project focuses on developing a Continuing Education (VEU) program tailored for employees in the fields of transportation, environment, planning, and technology in Danish municipalities. The project aims to enhance practical knowledge on how green initiatives in the transportation sector can address and transform municipal and citizens' transportation habits and mobility needs. The green transformation of the transportation sector can collectively contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive transportation system and, therefore, a more equitable society.

As part of the project, an inspiration-catalog and five videos have been released. Read the inspiration catalog and watch the five videos below.

The project offers a competence boost for municipal employees and promotes the development of the transportation sector in a sustainable direction.

Municipal participants in the VEU course:

  • Gain a proactive and interdisciplinary approach to transportation and mobility.
  • Can create more effective initiatives in the green transition.
  • Obtain a better understanding of target groups and users.
  • Understand user-driven innovation processes.
  • Can connect green initiatives with greater equity in transportation options.
  • Can identify any social disparities in new transportation initiatives.
  • Have better opportunities to improve the quality of life for all groups.

Green transportation, technology, and diversity are a rare combination in Danish politics. But what's the problem? In five short films, employees and politicians in the municipalities explain how they are working on new green and inclusive solutions in Herning, Sønderborg, and Copenhagen.

Researchers Hilda Rømer Christensen and Michala Hvidt Breengaard introduce the issue and simultaneously offer a suggestion on how green transportation and diversity can be included in municipal and citizen initiatives.

Intro: The challenges of sustainable transport, technology and diversity

Good transport conditions are of great importance in the everyday lives of many Danes, where mobility is central to life satisfaction and opportunities. Conversely, lack of or inconvenient transport options can lead to reduced quality of life, marginalisation and inequality. What are the challenges for Danish municipalities and Danish transport policy in terms of planning inclusive and sustainable transport?

Herning: Quality of life and independence for wheelchair users

In Municipality of Herning, buses have been introduced where wheelchair users can roll in and secure themselves on their own. An initiative that has improved quality of life and independence for the city's wheelchair users. Lene Ahle Skoubo, project manager in the Technical and Environmental Administration, talks about the initiative and visions for the future of transport.

Sonderborg: Strengthened public transport between rural and urban areas

In Sonderborg Municipality, attempts have been made to strengthen public transport from country to city in the form of village buses, car sharing and carpooling in the villages. Kirsten Bachmann, chairman of the Technical, Urban and Housing Committee in Sonderborg Municipality, talks about the experiments and her wishes for the future of public transport.

Copenhagen: Successes and challenges as a cycling city

The City of Copenhagen has been a success as a cycling city, but what new problems does it raise? Annette Kayser, project manager for mobility, City of Copenhagen, talks about the city's considerations. How can urban space be divided more equally between cars and cyclists? And what role do gender and diversity play in the city's planning and policy?

How can gender and diversity be incorporated into the work of municipalities and climate action plans?

Sustainable solutions are only sustainable if they are used. How can gender and diversity be incorporated into municipalities and climate action plans? The researchers present five guiding principles for a gender and diversity indicator and what data it requires.
