The research seminar Middle-class on the Move took place at October 5th in the campus of Faculty of Social Sciences, Copenhagen University. The aim of the seminar was to explore the Chinese middle-class as subject to critical and innovative research.
The idea of the Chinese middle-class has been both celebrated and contested and the seminar explored the various definitions of the Chinese middle-class as well as central comparative perspectives. The seminar discussed the growth of the Chinese middle-class, asking about the social and democratic character of this class today and provided perspectives that showed the controversial and ambivalent nature of not only one but several Chinese middle-classes in present day China.
Through more than 15 presentations, the seminar widened the scope of most current middle-class research by focusing on class as closely intertwined with lifestyles, family ideals and gendered norms and practices.
Participants
The seminar featured the two leading Chinese study scholars Dr. LI Chunling and Dr. David Goodman. Besides, a team of junior and senior scholars in China studies discussed their take on the middle-class from their various fields of specialisation.
Organizers
The Department of Sociology and the Co-ordination for Gender Studies, University of Copenhagen organized the seminar together with ThinkChina.dk. The seminar was financially supported by SC Van Fonden.
Outcome
The seminar will result in a scholarly anthology in 2019.
