Feminist Materialisms conference: Call for abstracts
International conference:
FEMINIST MATERIALISMS
Gender, Nature, Body, Materiality
The Coordination for Gender Research calls for abstracts to the international conference on Feminist Materialisms in Copenhagen, 26-27 April 2012.
The aim of the conference is to present and discuss new feminist materialisms and related theories, methodologies and case studies. The material turn opens a whole new way of analyzing materiality, yet also requires development of new methodological and scientific tools and new approaches and themes.
Speakers include:
Professor Karen Barad, University of California, USA
Associate Professor Vicki Kirby, University of New South Wales, Australia
Professor Hanne Pedersen, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
Professor Nina Lykke, Linköping University, Sweden
Associate Professor Cecilia Åsberg, Linköping University, Sweden
Associate Professor Malou Juelskjær, Aarhus University, Denmark
Materiality has for a long time been a challenge for feminist theorizing, yet the role of materialisms has currently entered the field of gender studies across a range of disciplines. The works by Karen Barad, Vicki Kirby and Nina Lykke have among others inspired the development of a so-called 'material turn' in feminist theory. How do such perspectives open up new for approaches and conceptualisations of gender, body, nature, matter and materiality?
The international conference on Feminist Materialisms focus on these new angles on materiality as well as related theories, methodologies and case studies with a focus on questions such as:
- How can feminism relate to bodily differences and the agency of materiality?
- How are notions of agential realism applied in practical/empirical research?
- How can entangled processes of body, technology and discourses be analyzed?
We call for abstracts related to various aspects of material feminisms, concepts and thinking, focusing on themes related to gender, nature, body and materiality. Suggested themes:
-
Body technologies
- Affective shaping of bodies
- Human-animal relations
- Agential realism
- Intra-actions in space, place, climate and governance.
- Diffractive Methodologies
NEW Deadline for abstracts: 2 January 2012
Abstracts to be sent to: feministmaterialisms@soc.ku.dk
The abstract should be maximum 1/2 page, and include information such as your name, contact information and university. We will contact contributors mid-January.
